Torn 'tween the UP and BNSF
Venice Beach left him with one pair of pants.
Back in the valley to study cartoons
saw him inspecting the second-hand shoes.
Wind-whipped and roughnecked and black bandanned
stubborn and ready like a rebel flag.
I listened close to all that he had said,
fixed on a peeper all purple and red.
"Pummeled by a whiskey-bent crusty was I
and left in the shadow of the rail yard to die
when all of a sudden I thought it divine
to make me some change and call a good time.
My lady drove 1200 miles
and what was Las Vegas is what we will hide
down in the Jameson bottle just cracked
enough to give us what we happened to lack.
And morning smelled sweeter than ever before,
and I realized room service was outside the door.
I ate 'til I couldn't and she slipped them a ten.
Yes, friends, we're moving in."
Now folks, here's the kicker--
the Summer before,
she had his belongings on the front lawn.
The police stood by and beheld the display
and truth told, she shoulda been hauled away.
But Springtime is ringing rekindling air
where the discarded turns into subsidized fare--
we sift and we rummage the bins for clues
'cause nothing is used when it's new to you.
